Norwegian Spirit carries 2,000 guests on a ship that punches above its size class in dining and entertainment variety. Built in 1998, she has been refurbished multiple times and now includes the NCL Freestyle staples — multiple dining venues, no fixed seating times, no assigned tables — alongside itineraries that favor Mediterranean and Asian ports over Caribbean loops.
Norwegian Spirit entered service as the Star Princess before Norwegian bought her and converted her to the Freestyle Cruising model. That history shows in her structure — she has bones that weren''t built for Norwegian''s specific vision, which occasionally shows in how spaces are organized. The overall guest experience still works well; the Freestyle model (no dress codes, no fixed dinner seatings, dine when and with whom you want) is the same as any NCL ship.
The dining program has improved significantly with each refurbishment. Cagney''s Steakhouse, Moderno Churrascaria, Le Bistro (French), and the Garden Café buffet are the core options. At 2,000 guests, the dining venues never feel overwhelmed, which is a genuine advantage over Norwegian''s larger ships where reservations can be difficult mid-week. The specialty dining is worth the surcharge on Spirit specifically because the crew-to-guest ratio keeps service quality higher than you get on Bliss or Encore.
At 2,000 guests, Norwegian Spirit is small enough that it accesses ports that larger ships can''t. Mediterranean ports with tender requirements (Amalfi, Santorini during busy season) work better on Spirit than on 4,000-guest ships. The smaller size also means the pool deck is usable rather than a sunbed battlefield.
Spirit''s itineraries favor the destination-forward traveler. Europe, Asia, and repositioning crossings appeal to the repeat cruiser who has done Caribbean seven-times and is looking for something different. First-time cruisers who book Spirit specifically for an Asian deployment (Japan, Vietnam, Singapore) will find a manageable ship with enough variety to stay engaged at sea.
Norwegian Spirit is not the ship for guests who want towering waterslides, an entertainment complex, or the full Las Vegas energy of NCL''s newest vessels. It is the ship for travelers who want the Freestyle flexibility without the megaship scale.
