Discovery Princess

Discovery Princess entered service in April 2022 after a delay caused by the pandemic, completing the Royal-class series that began with Regal Princess in 2014. By the time Discovery launched, Royal-class had been refined through six ships and MedallionClass — Princess's wearable technology initiative — had been deployed fleet-wide, making Discovery's integration more seamless than on ships that retrofitted it. The OceanMedallion wearable (a small puck that passengers wear as a lanyard, clip, or bracelet) opens cabin doors without touching a key card, locates crew members so they can find guests rather than the reverse, and connects to the Ocean Now platform that allows food, drinks, and items to be ordered from anywhere on the ship.

The MedallionClass implementation has divided guest responses in interesting ways. Guests who engage with the platform — using the Medallion app to pre-order specialty dining, manage their OceanReady check-in, track their party members' locations, and order from their chairs at the pool — find it meaningfully reduces friction. Guests who prefer to navigate a ship without digital intermediation find the Medallion ecosystem pushed more insistently than they'd prefer. Discovery is the best version of the platform, and what you make of it depends on your predisposition toward embedded technology on vacation.

The Royal-class amenity set is comprehensive: Crown Grill steakhouse, Sabatini's Italian, Salty Dog Gastropub, Alfredo's Pizzeria (included), International Dining Room, Movies Under the Stars on the pool deck, the Sanctuary adults-only retreat, and the full Princess entertainment program. The theater programs on Royal-class ships have been expanded compared to Grand-class; Discovery's production shows benefit from the newer venue design.

Discovery operates primarily from Los Angeles for Pacific coastal itineraries (Alaska, Mexican Riviera, Pacific Northwest ports) and repositioning sailings. The Los Angeles homeport positions it well for the California market that Princess has served since the line's founding.

The honest note: Discovery Princess is the most current Royal-class ship and the right pick for guests who want Princess's most modern implementation. Guests who've sailed Royal-class before will find it familiar in structure but refined in the digital experience. Guests new to Princess will find it a complete and well-executed introduction.
